CURRICULUM

WHAT WE DO
At Background Knowledge Project Inc., we design knowledge-building lessons that extend beyond the traditional elementary ELA block into other subject areas, ensuring students gain the content-rich knowledge necessary for deep comprehension. Grounded in the science of reading, our approach leverages proven literacy practices to strengthen students’ word knowledge, expand their background knowledge across diverse subjects, and develop their understanding of text structure.
By intentionally weaving literacy and differentiated language-building strategies into content-area lessons, we equip teachers with tools that not only improve reading comprehension in all subject areas but also foster curiosity, critical thinking, and long-term academic success for all students.
At Background Knowledge Project, we believe that less is more. We recognize that instructional time for subjects outside the ELA block is limited, which is why our lessons are intentionally designed to be completed in 30- to 45-minute sessions. Our scope and sequence provides a realistic, thoughtfully paced plan that ensures a manageable number of lessons can be taught within the school year—helping teachers maximize impact without overwhelming their schedules.
